However, it quickly recovered and began thriving under the Mongol yoke. In 1237-1238, the Mongols, under the leadership of Batu Khan, invaded Rus’ (the medieval state inhabited by the East Slavs), and Moscow was burnt to the ground. Over the following centuries, it gradually grew in size and importance, mainly due to its advantageous location at the crossroads of several important trade routes. Moscow was founded in the 12th Century by Yuri Dolgorukiy, a prince of the Rurik Dynasty. The city’s latitude is similar to that of cities such as Glasgow, Scotland, and southern parts of Alaska.
